Woke up this morning to see that Cliff Lee let millions (30 - 40 million actually) go in guaranteed money to resign with the Phillies. When I heard a third team was involved yesterday I figured it was Philly, but had to figure that it was for close to the same dollar amounts that the Rangers and Yankees were offering.
It's refreshing to see a player sign for less to go where they want. 30-40 million dollars is a lot of money to cast away. Still, Lee signed one of the richest pitching deals in history with Philly at 5 years / 120 million. Figures like that still baffle me. Still, letting 30-40 million go... when is enough money truly enough? Cliff Lee just made a statement toward that end last night. Will this change how some players sign in the future? We'll see.
If I were another National League club, I'd have a bit if a headache thinking about the Phillies rolling out Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels in a four game series.
Happy Hol'Lee'Days in Philly.
